oil leak at speedometer cable

I bought a used (1997, 2700 original miles) Savage a few weeks ago. I have noticed oil leaking where the speedometer cable screws onto the engine case. I noticed this was loose when I first got and inspected the bike. At first, I just hand tightened it, but have since snugged it up a little better with some pliers. It is still leaking. Is there an internal seal that is blown, or a faulty O-ring where the cable seats onto the housing, or do I just need to tighten it some more?

I would really appreciate any advice on this.
